Do you live in a house with shared facilities? Then your address may change. Because of a change in the law a shared room is no longer a separate address in the municipal administration. If you have a kitchen, toilet and shower shared with other residents, then you will live with other residents of the group on one address.
New student houses usually have already adopted the addresses in accordance with the new legal rules. In most older building the addresses will be adjusted in the coming months by the municipalities. What exactly changes will depend on the current number.
If your address is going to change you will receive the necessary information about the adjustment. As long as you have not received a letter of the municipality, you don't have to do anything. This may take some time because the re-numbering is for a large number of homes.
What are the effects?
If the municipality sends you a letter, your address will change. The municipality ensures that your new address is known to the main public authorities (including DUO and the tax office). The municipal letter will tell you what you need to do to ensure that your new address is known to others. Of course your post should be sent to the new address which you're going to share with the other residents in the group. The landlord will ensure that, where necessary, mailboxes will be adjusted.
All the steps
The municipality will check if the student houses should have a separate house number and will verify that the data in the basic registration is correct. If the details do not match their will be a change in the house numbers. This can be done by the withdrawal or granting of a house number.
The owner and resident first get a letter announcing the intention for the new house number. They have 4 weeks to give a response (This is called: “zienswijze”).
The municipality will decide about the house number in which the view of the owner/resident is answered. Owner and residents can object, within 6 weeks, after this decision.
About 3 months after the decision, the new house numbering will be a fact. In the meantime this allows the occupant to arrange the practical matters, such as address changes.
The landlord see to the practical consequences for the house, such as the house numbers and possibly the bells. You will receive information about these changes.
Tenants in older students complexes, with shared facilities, can often still ask to receive rent allowance. This is done by the department “Toeslagen” of the tax authorities. The tax office has promised that this right to rent allowance will not be lost by the change of address, but they cannot guarantee that the payment of rent allowance will be without delay.
The rental agreement with the landlord does not change. This will be the same, it is known what new numbers are given to the old house numbers.
If you do not agree with the decision, you can appeal.
