Converting a partnership
General
A registered partnership may be converted into marriage by the municipality. Ensure you make an appointment before you come over.
Description
Bring valid proof of identity for both partners.
Conversion
To convert your partnership the municipality will check and verify which documents are required in your situation. You are not required to have your partnership dissolved first. Converting a marriage into partnership is not possible.
Deed of conversion
During the ceremony the civil registrar will prepare a deed of conversion for both of you to sign. This deed will successively be recorded in the marriage register.
Witnesses
You do not require witnesses for a conversion. Only the bridal couple and the marriage registrar will sign the deed of conversion.
Conditions
Location
Would you like to give your conversion a more ceremonial and festive character? In that case you may also arrange for your partnership to be converted into marriage in the city hall or any other wedding location. This involves charges however. If you wish, you can also convert your partnership in another municipality.
Recognition abroad
Not all countries recognise a marriage that originates from a converted partnership. Are you not in possession of Dutch nationality, or will you be moving abroad in the future? In that case, ensure that you inquire well in time about the possible consequences with the authorities of the country concerned.
Charges
- conversion at the municipality: no charges
- conversion in another location: see Marriage charges
