Registering a foreign certificate
General
Do you have an certificate of an official matter from abroad: like a birth, marriage, divorce or death? In that case you must arrange for registration of that certificate with the municipality.

- Original certificate, if required, with attached translation and authentication
Original document
At the time of your appointment the municipality will take possession of your original document. You will be returned a copy instead. As soon as the municipality has processed your records you will receive a notification inviting you to collect your original document.
Statement regarding no marriage of convenience
Depending on your situation the municipality may ask you to make a Statement regarding no marriage of convenience ('Verklaring geen schijnhuwelijk'). You must both sign this statement.
How long does it take?
The municipality will handle your application within four weeks.
Conditions
- The official matter must be valid in the country in which it took place. This means that the certificate must have been produced according to local regulations, and by a competent authority.
- For registration of your foreign certificate you require the original certificate. Is this certificate not worded in English, French or German? In that case you will require a translation. This translation must be produced by a sworn translator.
- A foreign certificate must in most cases be legalised in the country where the official matter happened. Sometimes you are also required to have your translation legalised.
