Reporting witnesses
General
When you are going to marry or contract a registered partnership you require witnesses. Witnesses can be reported online. You can do so until 6 weeks before the day of your wedding or partnership.
Description
You can also make an appointment for applying to the city desk (‘stadskantoor’) of the municipality to report witnesses.
Please enclose, or bring:
- a copy of a valid passport, ID-card or driver’s licence for each witness
- in the case of witnesses living abroad: a copy of the proof of identity stating full first names
How many witnesses?
A bridal couple requires at least 2 but no more than 4 witnesses aged 18 or over.
What is the task of a witness?
When you are going to marry or enter into partnership you require witnesses. They will co-sign your marriage certificate, declaring in this way that you have given your mutual consent. It mainly concerns an honourable function. Witnesses often are relatives or your best friends.
Converting your partnership
Do you wish to convert your partnership into marriage? In that case you do not need witnesses.
