Incorrect disposal of waste

There are rules for the disposal of waste. Are you disposing of your waste incorrectly? For example, too early, too late, or next to the container? Or are you putting bulky waste on the street without an appointment? If the municipality sees that you are disposing of your waste improperly, you will receive a fine.

Do you leave waste incorrectly?

The municipality regularly checks for improperly disposed waste. If waste is found on the street or near a container, the municipality may inspect it to identify the owner. If the waste is traced back to you, you will be responsible for the removal costs. This is known as emergency administrative enforcement. The applicable costs are listed below.

1 garbage bag / box€ 100
2 garbage bags / boxes€ 125
3 garbage bags / boxes€ 150

Objection

Have you received a letter stating that you must pay costs, and do you disagree?
If so, contact the municipality first. This often helps clarify the situation. Still disagree? Then you may file an objection within 6 weeks of the date on the letter.

Is there any point in filing an objection?

You are always allowed to object to the costs. However, filing an objection is not always effective. In the following situations, the municipality will often reject your objection.

When objections are not effective

Everyone is expected to know the rules for disposing of waste.

You are personally responsible for ensuring that your waste is disposed of correctly, even if someone else disposes of it on your behalf.

The municipality removes improperly disposed waste immediately. This is always done without prior warning.

If you file an objection, the municipality will only consider your own violation.

The photo shows the location where your waste was found. Not all visible waste needs to be yours. Sometimes, waste from others may also appear in the photo.

In that case, you must provide proof that you had not been home for several days. For example, by showing plane tickets from your trip. Do you have housemates? Then you must also prove that they were not at home during that time.

You must pay the costs for the removal of the waste. These costs include, among other things:

  • Cleaning up and disposing of the waste
  • Investigation time and report preparation
  • Sending of official letters

You are never allowed to place waste next to a container, even if the container is full, blocked, or broken. You can then do the following:

  • Find another container and report it to Avalex.
  • Return at a later time.
  • If your waste or cardboard doesn’t fit through the container opening, use smaller bags or break the cardboard into smaller pieces.

All containers are equipped with sensors that monitor how full they are. When a container is nearly full, Avalex is notified and will empty it as soon as possible.

Do you bring your waste to collection points in the city center? Then you are only allowed to place your waste there on collection days between 6:00 and 7:30am. Placing waste the evening before is not allowed.
